Day 1 New York Today our flight takes us Cyprus, dinner and
breakfast will be served on flight.
Day 2 Larnaca/Limassol We are met at the Larnaca airport and
assisted by our local representative and transfer by bus to Limassol where we
will stay for the entire trip. Dinner Overnight at hotel.
Day 3 Limassol/Nicosia After breakfast we will depart for
Nicosia, The island's capital. Nicosia offers visitors plenty to see. A short
visit to the Cyprus Handicraft Center begins our tour, followed by a visit of
the Cyprus Archaeological Museum containing priceless artifacts of the island's
rich past. We continue along the Green Line, which divides the city in two, and
the 16th century Venetian Walls, to the Archbishopric. Here you will visit the
Cathedral of St. John and the Byzantine Museum, which houses the largest
collection of icons on the island. We will continue to St. Paul's Anglican
Cathedral, the headquarter for the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. We
will meet fellow Anglican and see history unfold. We will continue our tour with
a short visit to Laiki Yitonia, a recently restored 19th quarter of the city
with Taverns and Craft shops . Free time will be given to stroll around the
picturesque old town. Back to Limassol for dinner and overnight. .
Day 4 Mt. Olympus/Kykko Today we will travel through idyllic
mountain villages, this tour will take us just below the highest point on the
island, Mount Olympus standing 1,952 meters above sea level. On the way we will
visit Archangelos Michael church in Pedoulas, which is a painted steep-pitched
church in the lower part of the village dating back to 1474 (Included in the
Unesco list). We will then drive to Throni Peak to see the tomb of Archbishop
Makarios, first President of the Republic of Cyprus. From there we will visit
the island's most famous monastery, Kykko, where Makarios was a novice. Among
the many items of interest here we will be able to admire the miraculous icon of
Christ and the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke himself. Visit at Kykko Museum
that houses an important collection of consecrated vessels and Cypriot
antiquities. After Kykko Monastery we continue with a visit to Agios Nikolaos
tis Stegis church, which was, build in the 11th century using roughly cut stones
(Included in the Unesco list) and continue with a visit to a traditional village
Kakopetria . The old quarter of the village has been declared a protected area
and traditional houses have been restored. Upon arrival in Limassol we will stop
at the St. Barnabas' Anglican Church. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5 CURIUM- PAPHOS Our day begins with a visit to Curium,
an impressive Greco-Roman site that includes mosaics and a superb amphitheater.
Petra tou Romiou, the very spot where the legendary goddess of love emerged from
the foaming waves in our next stop. On the way visit Agia Paraskevi church in
Geroscipou village. We will proceed with a visit to St. Neophytos Monastery
founded at the end of the 12th century by the Cypriot hermit and writer
Neofytos. In the monastery, the church contains some of the most beautiful icons
of the Post-Byzantine period of the 16th century. It is a very interesting
ecclesiastical museum. Once in Paphos we will pass by the catacombs of Ayia
Solomoni, the Byzantine castle of forty columns and St. Paul's pillar. Apostle
Paul and Barnabas spent time in Paphos. We will visit the Anglican connection
(Ayia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa. After a stroll round the picturesque harbor we
begin our return journey. Return to Limassol for dinner and overnight.
Day 6 FAMAGUSTA & KERYNIA After breakfast, we will start
our visit to the occupied side of the island. Our first visit will be Agios
Nikolaos Church in Famagusta -(in the 16th century was converted in to a Mosque
named later Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque). It was constructed between the years
1298-1312 in the Lusignan period. The Lusignan Kings would be inaugurated as the
King of Cyprus at the St. Sophia Cathedral in Nicosia first, and following they
would be crowned as the King of Jerusalem at the St. Nicholas Cathedral in
Famagusta. Then we continue our visit to Othello's Tower which was built in the
12th Century during the Lusignan period, to protect the town of Famagusta. Our
next stop will be Salamis. The history of Salamis goes back to the 11th Century
BC. The first inhabitants of the town came here from Engomi after the earthquake
of 1075 BC. (it was one of the 12 City Kingdoms of Cyprus During the Ancient
Time. It was founded by Tefkros the son of Telemonas who was the King of Salamis
in Greece, after the Trojan War. We will then pass by the Nestorian Church St.
George of the Foreigners and St. Barnabas Monastery. St. Barnabas, born of a
Jewish family returns to Cyprus after his studies in Jerusalem and in 45 A.D.
starts to work with St. Paul as a missionary for Christianity. Because of his
activities he was killed by his compatriots. In the afternoon we will visit the
St. Andrew's church in Kerynia and the Kerynia castle. The castle stands on a
site that was in use during the Hellenistic and Roman periods of 111-11 B.C,
dominates the entrance to the harbor of Kerynia village. The first recorded
reference to the castle was in 1911 when Richar the Lion Heart conquered Cyprus
on his way to the crusades. Return to Limassol for dinner and overnight.
Day 7 Pyla/ Ayia Napa Village/Larnaca After breakfast we
will visit Pyla village the only village that has been inhabited by Greeks and
Turks after the Turkish Invasion in Cyprus. We will continue traveling along the
green line and will reach Dheryneia Village where we will be able to see from a
distance the dead city of Ammochostos, which is under Turkish Occupation. We
continue our tour with a visit to the charming medieval monastery dedicated to
‘Our Lady of the Forests' stands in the middle of Ayia Napa Village surrounded
by a high wall. Its 16th century church is partly underground and cut into the
rock. The hostel west of the church belongs to the World Council of Churches.
Then we continue our tour to Larnaca town. We will visit Saint Lazarus Church.
Saint Lazarus is the patron saint of Larnaka. Kition became his second home
after his resurrection by Christ, and he lived here for another 30 years. Saints
Barnabas and Mark ordained him Bishop of Kition. In the 9th century Emperor Leo
VI erected a magnificent church over his tomb. The church, one of the finest
examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus was faithfully restored in the 17th
century, and the iconostasis is an excellent example of baroque woodcarving. We
will also visit St. Helena's Anglican Church. Return to Limassol for a farewell
dinner and overnight.
Day 8 Limassol/Larnaca/USA Today we bid farewell to our
newly made friends as we transfer to the Larnaca airport for our flight to USA.
Arrive home same day.
