    Christian Life in the Culture of Cuba

    Cuba has many different Protestant denominations. Many of them are based in African culture. Africans who were brought to Cuba as slaves to work on the sugar plantations during the 15 and 1600's brought along their culture and their religious practices. This unique People-to-People program will orient you with the history of the many Protestant denominations, current practices, the place of religion in today's Cuban culture, as well as introduce you to the beauty of the Island and the complexities of today's multi-cultural Cuban society.

    Friday, Day 1 – New York to Montego Bay

    Today we meet at our international airport for our fl ight to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Upon arrival we are met by bus and transfer to the seaport to board our ship the Celeystial Crystal. This will give time to freshen up before we sail and have dinner. You may participate in the evening activities with a lecture about “Visual Arts in Cuba” or take dance lessons. (D)

    Saturday, Day 2 - Santiago de Cuba

    One of the most interesting and historically signifi cant places in Cuba, Santiago de Cuba is the island's center for Afro- Cuban culture and a key to Cuba's unique personality. Discover the military history including Moncada Barracks, where Fidel and Raul Castro commenced their assault on the Batista regime. (B,L,D)

    Sunday, Day 3 - at Sea

    Today we will spend the entire day at leisure on the ship. We will participate in a Sunday worship service and the rest of the day we can join in the various activities on the ship. This includes “Cuban Cigars,” Cuba's Unconventional Musical instruments”, rum history, meet Cuban staff, learn what makes Cuba different, learn the Cha, cha! (B,L,D)

    Monday, Day 4 - Havana

    Old Havana was founded by the Spaniards in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the core of the original city. The area contains interesting architecture, much of which has been restored by the Cuban Government. We will visit the Historical Center including Arms Square, the Royal Force Castle, San Francisco de Asis Square, the Cathedral Square and the Old Square. Visit the book vendors and interact. Some free time and lunch. Visit the Cuban Council of Churches/ Cuban Ecumenical Council. Meet with Christian leaders and CCC staff. Listen to an overview and presentation about the Community in Cuba and the work of the Council. After lunch we will visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center at the Baptist Church in the Havana municipalilty of “Marianao,” where we will meet with members of the Church and the Center who will tell us about their work, community projects, surrounding neighborhoods, etc. We will also have a chance to tell them a little bit about our Church and our activities in the community. Return to the ship to and freshen up before dinner and a Jazz Concert or other Cultural event. (B,L,D)

    Tuesday, Day 5 - Havana

    We will enjoy breakfast on the ship before listening to a brief presentation and overview by an architect or other representative from the Offi ce of the City Historian about the restoration and renovation programs taking place in Old Havana, and the social welfare and community project they support. Visit Arte Y Corte community project. Return to ship for lunch. After lunch visit the Fuster House, San Jose Market and free time. (B,L,D)

    Wednesday, Day 6 – Punta Frances (Isle of Youth)

    Today will be dedicated to nature and ecology. Pine forests scent the “Isle of Youth” and mingle with orange blossoms and warm ocean breezes. We transfer you to the beach at Port Frances. This is a glorious beach of pure white sand surrounded by crystal clear warm waters - perfect for snorkeling. Enjoy your afternoon on the beach in the sunshine! (B,L,D)

    Thursday, Day 7 – Cienfuegos

    Enjoy the beautiful city of Cienfuegos, “the Pearl of the South,” founded in 1819. Excursion highlights include visits to Plaza de Armas, the magnifi cent Teatro Thomas Terry, the Graphic Society of Cienfuegos, and a visit to one of the Protestant churches where you will have an opportunity to interact with the locals. Return to the ship for our cruise to Montego Bay. (B,L,D)

    Friday, Day 8– Montego Bay – New York

    After breakfast we will say farewell to our friendly crew and transfer to the airport for our fl ight home. Arrive the same day. (B)

    Cuban Council of Churches:

    Founded in 1941 on the theme “United to serve,” the Cuban Council of Churches is a fraternity of 37 Protestant churches, movements and institutions. It has been instrumental in mediating the relationship between the Protestant churches and the government. For more than half a century, the CCC has stood by its churches and people during economic unsettlement and natural disasters. The CCC assists churches to become more inclusive of people with disabilities and offers a national radio program, emergency food distribution, urban agriculture training and a Sunday School curriculum.
